Best sushi around. The Barrel Roll and anything with Walu are always tasty. Enjoy a Sapporo on draft and the relaxed atmosphere. Great happy hours too.

Great Japanese eats! Small plates are small... I was still hungry. Next time I'll order two or add appetizers.

We did not know what to expect from this tiny little sushi place, but we were very pleasantly surprised. The edemame and the albicore was the the best I've ever had. We ended up going 2 nights in a row and it was just as good the second night. I am looking forward to going back to Hood River just so I can eat at this sushi place again. The Albicore is a must!!

I have never experienced such bad service. Went in with my parents and waited to be seated along with another couple who had been there far before we got there. The woman asked the extremely creepy host if they were going to be seated soon because her husband had low blood sugar and was not feeling well. The host, who also seemed to not be all there... Told them their name was crossed off the list, offered them complimentary edamame and proceeded to seat our party. My mom insisted that the older couple sit down before us and the host told her that it was a four top and it didn't matter. So we sat at the large table all together. When we sat down, the couple still had not gotten the edamame they ordered 15 minutes ago, the gentleman was physically shaking and was having a difficult time even sitting up. We ordered our edamame 15 minutes after the couple and received ours at the same time. On top of that, we had to ask multiple times for chop sticks, plates and napkins. We ordered 6 rolls and only four came out. The last two took so long that we told her to just put our last two rolls in a To go container. We were very very disappointed in the service! Wish Kaze was still open!

Tasty sushi from a gang of white dudes. Great little find. Servers are hit and miss, but if you're looking for creative sushi and sashimi in a mountain town it's high on the list.

Amazing little sushi restaurant hidden under stairs. I've had sushi all over the world and this is top 5!!! Amazing service with great ambiance, this is a must if you're a sushi lover! We prefer the Gonzo roll and red tuna sashimi... Huge chunks of fish and very fresh! There was nothing about this place we didn't like! Actually having it for dinner two nights in a row!! Enjoy all!

I had heard great things about the sushi but was not impressed at all. I tried 4 rolls and none of them were anything special or really all that great. It wasn't bad but also wasn't good. The prices were not bad and they had a happy hour menu that had some good options. The service is the main reason I will not go back. The waiter treated my (20 something year old) friends and I as though he would prefer to not waste his time at our table. He wasn't very helpful and overall not friendly at all. When we asked to split our bill, he handed us a calculator and told us to do it ourselves. He brought our food out at different times (10 minutes apart), even when we requested to have the main items at the same time.

I guess I'm spoiled coming from the S.F. Bay Area in the sense that I'm used to authentic Japanese food. This food is inauthentic and terrible. The "seared scallops in a ginger cream sauce" was rubbery scallops in a thick gravy-type sauce. The miso soup tasted like dishwashing fluid. The vegetables in the vegetable tempura were raw. However, my sister had avocado maki and really liked it. Her pineapple tofu was average. The service was slow and rude. Ordering is done by writing the order down on a card. After we did this, the waitress still asked us what we wanted to order. I really wish I could rate this place higher as I want to support local businesses. Hopefully they can improve their food and service.

Awesome service and some of the best vegetarian sushi ever! Loved that we could get the soy wrap. I judge a sushi place on how clean it smells. It was great and it was also a packed night.

Delicious rolls. Even better sashimi/nigiri!! Big chunks of fish (we got salmon/red tuna). So fresh and smooth. Get the Gonzo roll! Our favorite! Great little basement sushi joint. Underground secret in Hood River! Great prices even! Our second time in just over a month and we live 2 hours away! Went here two nights in a row! Doubled up on red tuna sashimi and Gonzo rolls!

Sushi Okalani offers an assortment of delicious sushi rolls and other staples of Japanese cuisine, along with a wide selection of sake and beer. The chefs are all professionally trained and very friendly - eager to take special requests and make recommendations. If you do plan to try out Sushi Okalani, I would advise that you arrive early or go in a small group of two or three; seating is very limited and fills up quickly.

Let me start with, I love sushi. I would certainly be considered a sushi snob. Conveyer belt sushi joints disgust me. Not just because the presentation is lame, but they often use a poor quality product. And we are talking about raw fish. Not something you want to eat if it's of any less than stellar quality. So, what I suggest while in Hood River is venturing over to Sushi Okalani. I was delighted to see the quality of fish(no conveyor belt here) and I asked about it. Lots of wild options, some local, Ahi from Hawaii and an overall nice variety that is changed up frequently. I tried Walu for the first time here and now have a new obsession. There are some creative rolls and a variety of Tobikko which I was delighted to try as well. The chef's are personable and knowledgeable. The Sake selection is wonderful. I never knew how much that stuff could kick your ass...and the more you drink the better looking the chef's get. There is one guy there that speaks Japanese which is really cool if you have cultural questions. I also just learned that Sushi O. is now open 5 days a week for lunch with some new lunch specials. I haven't tried them yet but am looking forward to it. Here, Here for Sushi Okalani doing it right!

Ordered the Ahi Poke bento meal at lunch. Fish and ingredients were fresh and tasty, however the bento aspect was lacking. Miso soup was not complimentary and all that came with the fish dish and rice was an "Asian Slaw", or merely a yellow cabbage lightly drizzled with a rice vinegar-like dressing. The amount of food presented would not be considered the traditional "bento" in Japanese restaurants. Neither good value nor imaginative. Would not return here again.

Being from the Midwest, we were really looking forward to some good sushi. We had Blowfish Sushi in San Fran, and it was good, but this little gem in Mt. Hood, OR, blew us away. We loved it. Ate sooo much sushi. Many different kinds of rolls. Ate on with a morel mushroom on top. SO GOOD! And the tuna melts in your mouth. So delish.

Good sushi and nice atmosphere. I can't really say the food was mind blowing, but we did enjoy ourselves. The biggest downside to our visit was the service. The waitress barely checked in and we had to flag her down several times. Although, I don't think it was completely her fault. It looked like they only had two waitress to cover a busy friday night.

This place is cozy and hip, maybe a little too hip. The decor appears to be japanese, but upon closer look at the interior and menu, there are thai, chinese, hawaiian influences. But I think it is supposed to be a sushi bar. The service is friendly, that is for sure, but they got my order wrong so not so good. The food was above average. I especially enjoyed their yakisoba. The prices are average: an order of yakisoba, one dragon roll, and one celilo roll = $30.50. They have a happy hour 5-6 pm daily and all day sunday. I wouldn't mind going back, but it wouldn't be my first choice while in town.

My husband and I tried them for lunch. After the waitress sat the 2 gentlemen before us at the last 2-seater table, she turned to me announced that we had to sit at the sushi bar. There was only one other 2-seater and only one other couple at it. At the look on my face after her bald statement, she then hastened to explain that the rest of the tables, all 4-seaters, had to be kept clear in case of other people. That might have made sense had there been other people. The third couple left within 10 minutes. We were the last seated for lunch. The two gentlemen, who received faster and better service than us, well, it turned out that one was a supplier and on a first-name basis. She just seemed bothered by customers. She helped me choose a dish (I was unable to have the yakisoba as I am allergic to peanuts) which was the daily plate special but neglected to tell us it was a higher price than what was listed on the chalkboard. She had to be motioned over any time we needed any service. Perhaps she was new, and if so, needs some better training and manners, and if that was the owner or manager behind the sushi bar, he could stand to get some manners also. The food was good, service sucked. Too bad the other Japanese place isn't open for lunch.

Our only choice for Sushi in the Gorge. Inventive specials (especially the Ski Patrol and Walu Eye) great, friendly service and melt in your mouth fresh fish (the albacore is consistently amazing). Have yet to find Sushi in Portland that comes close, and all this in a basement.

After a day of Kiteboarding on the river we were hungry for some fresh fish. Anxiously waiting for the opening bell at 5:00 pm. We were not sure what to expect. We were promptly greeted and sat by a very friendly and familiar face from town. (Forgot her name, but Yeaah ! she was great) Our food quickly arrived and one bite into soft shell crab nigri and you know Sushi Okalani don't mess around. Top quality fish, excellent service and happy vibes. We will be back.......................what time do you open tomorrow? Good Job !

We stopped in for sushi here on our first visit to hood river as a couple.. And we fell in love with it. I've eaten a lot of sushi in a lot of different places.. And this was really terrific. Excellent service, fast and friendly.. We had the cat-5 maki and the tempura vegetable platter. FireWire asparagus roll so good!! We would absolutely suggest this to anyone in the market for delicious sushi. Always our first stop when we travel to Hood River!

Pretty good. They have a wide variety of sushi on their menu. It is on the pricey side and the service isn't the best but you get to watch the "chef" make the sushi in front of you if you at at the sushi bar.

A rare sushi operation devoid of visible Asian staff, but then again, this IS Hood River. The staff, while still sluggish, is a dramatic improvement on the narcoleptic pace set by the competition up the hill. We were seated relatively quickly, and it was Ska Night (remember Ska? I pretend I don't,) which meant $1 pints of Sapporo (which in the city that forgot happy hour is remarkable) and deals on something that may have been called the Gordita sushi, which was as regrettable as it sounds. It was a cone of nori around rice and some foamy orange-colored goo; can't say what it was, but I'd steer clear. Otherwise, the sushi was reasonable, if not a little pricey. The specials board is uniquely placed as to be legible to people entering from outside, but invisible to patrons, leading to plenty of awkward forays back to the front door to examine the options. For a guaranteed excellent dining experience in HR, get brick-oven pizza. For Ska & Sushi, try Okalani.

Service is great and employees are very friendly! The food is just ok... Not bad, not great... Just ok. The flavors are kind of bland and fish isn't very fresh tasting. I'd rather wait to visit Portland and pay the same price to go some where that's exceptional. It's always busy though so I could be wrong, maybe I'm just picky?

I come to Hood River almost every summer, and build my eating schedule around the dinner I plan at Okalani. It's awesomely fresh fish, not always expertly cut, but fantastic tasting. They have hipster staff, beer, sake, edamame, a lot of weird rolls, and standard nigiri. Remember to ask for the daily specials. Those are typically worth it. (In case it matters, my sushi experience is US metropolitan: SF, NYC, etc.)

One of the only Sushi bars in the Hood River area. Sushi Okalani offers up some good sushi at a good price. Their friendly laid back atmosphere and some great service is very nice after a long day out on the water. A good place to get some fresh sushi right in Hood River, not the best I have ever had but pretty good none the less.

We were visiting Hood River and didn't have high expectations for sushi, but wow. This was the best sushi we have had in a long time. The service was great, the staff were really friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was relaxed and fun. But the best part was the salmon. They had wild salmon that day and it just melted in our mouths- it was ridiculously fresh and delicious, and we ended up ordering a second plate of it for "dessert" that we ate in about 30 seconds. Same story with the yellowtail and spicy tuna rolls. All the fish was so fresh with no fishy taste or rubbery texture, it all just melted and the mixtures in the rolls were delicious. We also had their teriyaki chicken, which was awesome. It was made with breast meat and didn't have that gluggy, sweet sauce you normally get. We appreciated the waiter telling us that they had some salmon belly in that day when we ordered our second batch of salmon, and it was perfect and delicious. We were just as happy that our bill was about the same as what you would get for a brewpub dinner, but so much more satisfying. Rolls, nigiri, more salmon, teriyaki chicken and a drink each for $45 is really not bad. We loved it. We would go back to Hood River just to east sushi. Never thought I'd say that...

Sushi Okalani is my absolute favorite restaurant in Hood River with its mouth-watering sushi and creative daily specials; excellent wine, beer and sake offerings; and probably the best restaurant vibe in all of Hood River with its friendly service, awesome music and comfortable decor. Okalani is the place to have an amazing fine-dining experience in a chill, relaxed atmosphere. They also have tatami Japanese style lounge tables for bigger private parties, and just opened for lunch! What more could you ask for in a small town?

I ordered take-out from this place and I don't think I would do it again. At least not order the same thing. I had the curry tofu, and for as much as I spent (over $13 I think), maybe my expectations were a little high. I got some soggy tofu and a bit of super salty curry slapped on top of a bunch of white rice. Not satisfying at all. But the restaurant was hopping and I could tell it was a very popular place. I might return to give the sushi a shot but I will definitely not order to-go from here again.

Best sushi in town, period. Out of like two places, but still. There are some great restaurants in Hood River and this place stands out, that's a big deal. Plus, because of the region, they often have fresh, delicious oysters, which is a super bonus. High quality, fresh sushi and the staff is awesome, very friendly. They make an out-of-towner feel like a local. I will always make it a point to come here when in Hood River.

A little competition never hurt anyone. Sushi Okalani has come a long way. They used to be the only sushi restaurant in Hood River, dishing out average fish quality at above average prices. But since Sushi Kazi came into town, Sushi Okalani has stepped it up on service and quality big time. Although the prices are still on the higher side of the sushi average, they do have some great offerings. Try ANY Walu sushi (the Wango roll with walu, avocado, and mango) or just a Walu nigiri which will melt in your mouth. The salmon was particular good and fresh on my last visit, but I wouldn't normally order salmon for sushi. My husband and I have ordered the Hamachi appetizer many times which is always a winner. Sundays are happy hour all day, so you get some good specials for just $5. Go there on Sundays -- it's usually empty!!

The restaurant was pretty cramped and the food was so-so. Every roll was spicy which was unexpected and unwanted. Apparently their imitation crab mix has added kick.

Best sushi my bf and I have ever had. We eat Japanese in Portland all the time and the hotel concierge in Hood River said this was the place to be. Man, was she right! I want to rent a bus, put all the sushi chefs in Portland in it and take them here! The flavor combinations are inspired. For example, the amazing smoked steelhead and sweet-hot mustard roll had us wanting to move to Hood River. The fried catfish was fantastic (and I make my own, so I know). There were no weak points in what we ordered. It was Asian, it was delicious, and it was...interesting! My tastebuds were never bored, like with the same old ngiri menu you see everywhere. We will be coming to Hood River again soon - to hike, to eat fresh fruit, and to eat as much as we can at Sushi Okalani!

Some of the best sushi I have ever had. Really fresh and yummy. I suggest the Gonzo and Yasui rolls. For an appetizer the scallops with mushroom sauce are delicious.

I ate couple times at Okalani Sushi and it has always been a good experience. I went with colleagues, friends, parents, dates and it always worked. It is not a super fancy upscale sushi place but it is a local well above average sushi place. I am now a local in Hood River but I am a foreigner on my passport and I have traveled quite a bit on the globe trying lots of new delicacies. My expectations are always high when it comes to food and I have to say that I have not been disappointed at this restaurant. On top of that, it is downtown Hood River which is always a great place to hang out. The food is good, the price is fair, the atmosphere is friendly, so I will certainly go back.
